District 1: Road & Bridge Report (Jan 2012)

Our District 1 top priority, as is most citizens in eastern Comanche County, is to complete the Trail Road project as soon as possible.  We hope to receive a letter from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) over the next few days which will state we can move forward with the project.  We certainly appreciate Comanche Nation and the BIA for covering the majority of cost for this project, as they have done for several projects over the past few years.  Without their help, this major project wouldn’t have been possible.

Get Prepared: make a disaster kit

This winter’s mild weather has hardly been enough to break out the heavy coat, let alone consider creating an emergency preparedness kit, but officials want to remind everyone to be ready for anything.

Thousands of Lawtonians were left celebrating in the dark New Year’s Eve after wind-swept power lines resulted in outages all over town. Calls poured in to 911 dispatchers from concerned residents, prompting Comanche County Emergency 911 Director Derrell Morgan to remind residents that a phone number to the power company is just one item to include in a preparedness kit. Comanche County Emergency Management officials say a kit is a must-have item in the event of a disaster.

According to Comanche County Public Information Officer Chris Killmer, Oklahoma ranks higher than any other state in per capita disaster declarations, and third overall in total disaster declarations. According to a Jan. 6 FEMA press release, 2011 was marked by more billion-dollar natural disasters than any year on record.
