Voters now required to show ID

Residents in the various areas that are holding school bond elections need to be aware of a change in law.

As of July 1 all voters are required to show proof of identity in order to vote at their polling place on election day or to vote early at their county election board office.

The law is very specific about the kind of identification that can be used.

It can be issued from the federal government such as a military ID or passport, from the state such as a driver’s license, or identification from a federally recognized tribal government. The document must show the name of the person along with a photograph and must include an expiration date that is after the election.

An alternative is to use the voter identification card received when registering to vote even though they don’t include a photograph or an expiration date.

According to the election board, replacement cards are free.
