Get Prepared: make a disaster kit

This winter’s mild weather has hardly been enough to break out the heavy coat, let alone consider creating an emergency preparedness kit, but officials want to remind everyone to be ready for anything.

Thousands of Lawtonians were left celebrating in the dark New Year’s Eve after wind-swept power lines resulted in outages all over town. Calls poured in to 911 dispatchers from concerned residents, prompting Comanche County Emergency 911 Director Derrell Morgan to remind residents that a phone number to the power company is just one item to include in a preparedness kit. Comanche County Emergency Management officials say a kit is a must-have item in the event of a disaster.

According to Comanche County Public Information Officer Chris Killmer, Oklahoma ranks higher than any other state in per capita disaster declarations, and third overall in total disaster declarations. According to a Jan. 6 FEMA press release, 2011 was marked by more billion-dollar natural disasters than any year on record.

Fairgrounds preps for 'Classic' weekend

The people who put on the annual Wichita Mountains Classic Pig and Lamb Show hope this weekend will be a repeat of last year’s success story.

Hundreds of entrants

Despite the fact there were six other livestock shows going on that weekend, exhibitors overwhelmingly preferred Lawton’s. Comanche County Fairgrounds Executive Director Phil Humble had expected 250 entrants, and 400 showed up for the first day of judging. The parking lot was full, and livestock trailers were lined up on Sheridan Road waiting to get in.
