Courthouse decking repair approved

Scaled-back repairs to the street-level decking of the Comanche County Courthouse will be under way soon.

The Comanche County commissioners approved an agreement with S Construction to repair five columns supporting the decking for a total of $24,000 during a regular weekly meeting Monday morning.

Central District Commissioner Ron Kirby, who brought the need for the repairs to the commissioners earlier this year, said the small price tag is due to county officials deciding to take care of the problem in increments, instead of all at once.

County issues Elgin School Bonds

Elgin Public Schools will soon have more classrooms, thanks to some help from the Comanche County commissioners.

Elgin_SchoolsThe commissioners, acting in their capacity as the Comanche County Educational Facilities Authority, voted to issue $14.025 million in bonds to pay for classroom additions to Elgin’s middle and elementary schools, as well as a few other improvements. Elgin voters approved the bond proposal Sept. 13 by a 67 percent margin.

Tom Crimmins, superintendent of Elgin Public Schools, thanked the commissioners for their support and said Elgin schools have seen unprecedented growth over the last few years.

Eastern District Commissioner Gail Turner said the Educational Facilities Authority was created to finance bond issues for any school in the county. Because the county has a better credit rating than any school district, the county can issue a higher amount of bond debt at one time than a school would be able to issue if it handled the bonds itself, he said.
